25 Benefits of Memorizing God’s Word

Memorize God's Word
Why should I memorize God’s Word?

Have you ever wondered why you should memorize God’s Word? Make no bones about it. If the words we write are important, God’s word is even more so. It’s so important, God said not to change it in the slightest (Deuteronomy 4:2  Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you).

So then, it is reasonable that something of such high value should be hidden in our hearts (Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Deuteronomy 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart).

Here are the three main reasons we should memorize God’s Word:

  1. The Bible commands you to memorize Scripture – Deuteronomy 6:6; Job 22:22; Proverbs 7:1-3
  2. The Bible implies you should memorize Scripture – Joshua 1:8; Jeremiah 15:16; Colossians 3:16
  3. The Bible teaches by example that you should memorize Scripture – Job 23:12; David-Psalm 119:9-11, 14; Joshua 1:8; Jesus-Matt. 4:1-11

Have you memorized John 3:16?

I thought of adding the above verses, but they will be more beneficial if you look them up on your own. It would make a great Bible study/devotion. Plus, the Bible commends those who study the Word of God (Acts 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so).

So, if anyone asks you, “Why should I memorize Scripture, and how will it benefit me?” you will now be ready to give an answer (1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear).
